'Minute to Win It' Sticky Balls Game

By

Definition:

You have to wonder how many giggles were circulating around the table when the folks from Minute to Win It were deciding what to title this game. And now I have the honor of having written an article titled Sticky Balls, as well as one about Big Balls. I can retire happy.

The Goal

Despite the name, this game is not in the least uncomfortable to set up and play at home. All you have to do is roll marbles along a table so that they stick on a piece of double-sided tape at the end of the table. Kids and grownups alike will have fun with this one, so it's a great addition to any kind of party. Perhaps though, for the kids, you might want to change the name of it. Imagine those children going home and telling their parents that they played Sticky Balls whilst at your party. You'd likely have to move to a new town after that.

Equipment Needed

All joking aside, here's your supply list to get ready to play the game. Hit up your local dollar store for the marbles if you don't have them on hand.

  • Lots of marbles
  • A container to hold lots of marbles
  • A long table
  • Double-sided tape
  • A plastic tablecloth and clips to protect your table with (optional, see note)
  • A one-minute timer or stop watch

Note: This game involves rolling marbles, which could possibly damage your table top. You'll also be sticking the tape to the table's surface. If you decide to protect the table with a plastic tablecloth, use clips to secure it to the table at both ends, and choose a plain, light colored tablecloth so that the marbles can be clearly seen while playing.

Setting Up the Game

Sticky Balls doesn't take a lot of work to set up. That sounds odd, doesn't it? Anyway, here's all you need to do.

Place the tablecloth (if using) on the table, making sure that it's pulled taut without bunching or wrinkling; secure the tablecloth with the clips. Cut a strip of double-sided tape that will run the width of the table. Remove the backing from one side of the tape and adhere it to one of the short ends of the table (or the tablecloth).

Place the marbles in the container and place the container at the opposite end of the table from the tape. Just before you're ready to play, remove the rest of the backing from the tape.

How to Play

The player must choose and announce his or her designated rolling hand before jumping in. After that hand is chosen, it is the only hand that may touch and roll the marbles -- the other hand must be placed behind the back. The player should be standing at the end of the table where the marbles have been placed.

When the one-minute timer begins, the player may start to roll the marbles, one at a time, in an attempt to get them to stick on the tape at the other end of the table. If he or she can get five marbles to stick on the tape before the timer runs out, the game has been won.

The Rules

As always, there are some rules for this game that must be adhered to. Adhered -- get it? 'Cause the tape? Yeah, okay, here are the rules:

  • You may only use one hand to pick up and roll the marbles
  • You may only roll one marble at a time
  • All five marbles must be stuck to the tape simultaneously for three consecutive seconds in order to win

Tips and Tricks

You don't really need any tips for this one, do you? It's pretty easy. All you need to do is roll the marbles at the right speed so they reach the tape without flying past it.
