What Was Your Favorite New Game Show of 2012?

By December 31, 2012

Follow me on:

2012 didn't bring us a ton of new game shows, but there were certainly some good ones. GSN led the pack with their massive and unexpected hit, American Bible Challenge. It seems many were disappointed with GSN's reboot of The Pyramid (though I really enjoyed it), while Beat the Chefs completely tanked (and again, I enjoyed it).

On the major networks we got Take Me Out from FOX and Take It All from NBC. Neither show was a massive hit. Over at the CW, a little show called Oh Sit! gained in popularity and apparently appealed to a much wider audience than I would have anticipated.

So, from the crop of new game shows we saw this year, which one did you enjoy the most? Is it one of those listed in the poll, or was there a different show that caught your interest?

Nothing from the US really stood out to me, to be perfectly honest. Though I’d be willing to include the Spanish-language version of “Minuto Para Ganar,” hosted by none other than Marco Antonio Regil.

Going off the board a bit, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the revival of the British version of Blockbusters earlier this year–even if Simon Mayo wasn’t the best host. Iron Chef Japan 2012 was also a must-watch (yes, it came back, and hey, if Beat the Chefs counts, why not the one that started it all?)

Although I do not get GSN, I did manage to see the first episode of Pyramid. On that admittedly limited basis, I was not disappointed at all in the show itself. However, I did think then (and still think now) that the scheduling was AWFUL! It was on in the middle of the afternoon! (3 pm, Pacific time, if memory serves). This thing should have been on Prime Time!

Of course, so long as GSN remains “all Family Feud, all the time,” they can’t hope to draw much attention to their daytime projects….

Couldn’t agree more, Mark. 6pm Eastern was the worst possible slot for The Pyramid. You’re up against local news, most of your target audience is either watching that, or they’re not home from work, yet. And that slot gets worse the further west you go.
The two-hour Friday block is too much to launch a new show…one-hour max would have worked better.
And why couldn’t GSN have tried 11:30p after their beloved Harvey Feud? (Don’t get me wrong, Steve is great, but it seems to be the only thing GSN airs…and they only have one season of it!)

The Pyramid was as close to a perfect remake as game show fans could have asked for. Yeah, some of the celebrities sucked at the game…but so did many of Dick’s early guests on The $10K. But over time, the herd was thinned, and Dick (and Bill) had a pretty reliable group of good celebrity game players. So can Mike.

I still believe The Pyramid could be successful with some proper care and feeding from GSN.

1) Make it a weekly, not a daily show. You’ll be able to cycle celebrities through faster. And if you book a lemon, you’re not stuck with them for an entire week.

2) But still produce 40 episodes. 8 weeks in a deadly time slot was NOT worth the investment. But spread those 40 episodes over 40 weeks, each one seems more like an event. Then you can strip the reruns in the afternoon after the first run if you want.

3) AIR IT IN PRIME TIME! Use Harvey or Bible as a lead-in…then repeat it 3 hrs. later for the West Coast.

Has anyone heard if it’s officially been cancelled?

I really enjoyed I’m smarter than a 5th grader or NOT smarter. I like the ones that challenge me to think and to learn at the same tome. I’m 84 years old and still like to learn.
