Keep the Change is a little bit like that magic trick in which you snap a tablecloth off a table covered in dishes without moving anything but the cloth itself. In this Minute to Win It game, you're pulling a dollar bill from a pint glass without disturbing the coins resting on top.
With a quick tugging motion, pull a dollar bill from the rim of a glass. The paper money is held in place by a stack of quarters, which must remain standing on the glass in order to win.
This game uses glass cups, so you might want to keep it for adults only. Have a broom and dust pan handy just in case. Here's what you'll need to set up and play Keep the Change.
- Five pint glasses (standard style with wide rims)
- Five one-dollar bills
- Twenty-five quarters
- A one-minute timer or stop watch
How to Play
Setting up this game is almost as difficult as playing it. It's really important that you have the right pint glasses with thick rims, otherwise the quarters will never stay in place. You don't want to be frustrated in setting up the game - save that for trying to complete it successfully! Tip: If you just can't find the right glasses, try mason jars. You could even use styrofoam cups weighted down with rocks as a last resort.
Place each of the pint glasses on the table forming a row. You want them fairly spaced out so that the motion from one glass doesn't affect the stacked coins on the next one. On the rim of each glass, facing the edge of the table, place one of the dollar bills so that the rim is in the middle of the bill. Then, carefully stack five quarters on top of the dollar, resting on the glass rim. If the quarters simply won't stay you've got pint glasses with skinny rims. There's no shame in that - they just won't work for this game.
To play, start the one-minute timer. The contestant starts with the first glass and tries to pull the dollar bill out without disturbing the stack of quarters. If any or all of the coins fall, that pull does not count. To win the game the contestant must get at least one of the stacks of coins to remain standing after pulling out the bill. So basically, you must succeed in at least one of your five attempts.
The rules are simpler than anything else about this game.
- Players may only use one hand to pull the dollar bills out - you may not touch the coins, the glasses, or the table at all.
- The quarters must stay in their stack of five for at least three consecutive seconds in order to win.
Tips and Tricks
Practice, practice, practice! Pull the dollar bill out as straight as you can - if it's tilting upward or downward you're more likely to tip the coins. Have patience and don't rush or get flustered. One minute doesn't seem like a lot of time, but you have twelve seconds for each glass. That's plenty.
