One of the most popular tournaments on Jeopardy!
is the Teen Tournament. The contestants are made up mostly of high school kids, all of them between the ages of 13 and 17.
How the Teen Tournament Works:
The rules and format for the Teen Tournament are the same as those for the College Championship
. 15 contestants face off against each other in the first week of competition, three per game. The five winners and four wildcard contestants all move on to the second week. The winners of the next three games move on to the two-game final round, in which scores are added together to determine the winner.
As the years have gone by, the prize money for the Teen Tournament has gone up significantly. Back in 1987 when the tournament began, the winner took home $25,000. Now, the prizing is as follows:
- Quarterfinalists: $5,000
- Semifinalists: $10,000
- Third Place: $15,000
- Second Place: $25,000
- Winner: $75,000
Occasionally there are other sponsored prizes given out as well, such as computer packages and cars, to the winners.
