The Price is Right Celebrates Episode 7000 This Week
Monday November 2, 2009
The Price is Right is celebrating a milestone this week, and you'll want to tune in for this one for sure. On Thursday, November 5th, the show marks its 7000th episode.Since 1972, The Price is Right has racked up some pretty interesting (and impressive) stats. Check these out:
- Almost a quarter of a billion dollars in cash and prizes given out to over 62,000 contestants.
- Two million studio audience members.
- The phrase, "a new car!" has been hollered by Johnny Olson, Rod Roddy, and Rich Fields over 15,000 times. (Of which only about 7,000 cars have been awarded.)
- Contestants from all 50 states have played, as well as many Canadians and visitors from other countries. This remains one of the only Canadian-friendly game shows out there.
Three of the six games on the show will be those that were included in the very first broadcast, on September 4th, 1972. Want to wager any guesses on what they might be? It might have been fun if they had reverted back to the old prices for those too. (I'm kidding, of course.)
This should be a fun show, and I'm sure we'll see a few flashbacks to the first episode. The Price is Right has been quite enjoyable so far this season and I for one am looking forward to many more seasons.

Well, without resorting to looking on YouTube, I know two of the first three games played were Any Number and the Bonus Game. I’d bet that the third was Double Prices.
I’d be shocked if they don’t play Now or Then on that episode, using all products that were available in 1972 that still are today.
I also think it’d be fun if the played The Price WAS Right and play a car game for a restored classic ‘72 model, using the original MSRP. (Remember, back then many cars cost just $2-3K!)
But maybe they can do some of that on the 40th anniversary show in 2012!
I was in the audience. It was totally rigged for some sorority girls who obviously fit the demographic the product placers are looking for. One of them won a rolex, one of them won ~10k in cash. One of the girls got a showcase showdown of a Mac Pro computer setup and a trip to another continent, and her response was “I already have a Mac Pro music setup, I’ll pass!” Watch for the old black guy — they really screwed him. I thought half the audience was going to riot because we all saw the wheel at a different number than they put up on the board. Oh and they are cheap. The audience got nothing. Everyone knew it was cheap so they gave like $100 to one person if everyone kept going nuts for the cameras. 7000th episode celebration? Give me a break. This is still your grandma’s price is right — except you still get a quarter from her for showing up.
