Andy Richter Takes Round One of the Jeopardy! Celebrity Invitational

Follow me on:

Tonight marked the first round of the quarter-finals in the new Jeopardy! Celebrity Tournament, and Andy Richter won handily over his competitors, Wolf Blitzer and Dana Delany.

Delany and Blitzer both walked away with $25,000 for their charities (the Scleroderma Research Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, respectively), but Richter scored an impressive $68,000 win, all of which will go to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Richter will also return to play in the semi-finals of the year-long tournament.

The game itself started out innocently enough, but it was soon clear who would be taking home the win. Richter was well-versed in everything from pop culture to literature, and just about everything else on the board. The Jeopardy! writers provided some fun categories, including "The Situation Comedy Room" and "China, But No Beach," and from my perspective the clues themselves were just a little easier than regular Jeopardy!. That said, Richter knew what he was doing.

The folks over at Sony sent us some quotes from Richter, and here's what he had to say about his win:
"I’ve got a good buzzer thumb. I think that’s the secret to my success – my thumb."

"It’s not just for the hospital, but for kids stricken with cancer everywhere who will benefit from any amount of money I can make."
The next installment of the Celebrity Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament will air on Thursday, October 15th, with NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, actor Michael McKean, and CNN host Soledad O’Brien at the podiums. At the end of the tourney, the winner gets one million dollars for his or her charity.
