The Newlywed Game Welcomes its First Same-Sex Couples

By , About.com GuideSeptember 16, 2009

Follow me on:

The Newlywed Game is gearing up for its second season, and they're welcoming a few celebrity couples this time 'round. More noteworthy, however, is the fact that they're finally allowing same-sex couples to compete on the show.

The first gay couple who will play the game is George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes) and his husband Brad Altman. Now I know this might be a contentious issue for some folks, but personally, I think it's about time. So good for you, GSN!

Now, on to the list of celebrity couples. I'm sure you can guess a few of them before you even read this list.
  • Davy Jones of The Monkees and Telemundo actress Jessica Pacheco
  • Edyta Śliwińska and Alec Mazo (Dancing with the Stars)
  • Former Denver Broncos linebacker Glenn Cadrez and Playmate Brande Roderick
  • Greg Vaughan (General Hospital) and actress-model Touriya Haoud
  • Christopher Knight (The Brady Bunch, Trivial Pursuit: America Plays) and Adrianne Curry (America's Next Top Model)
  • Damien Gurganious and Nicole Brewer (The Biggest Loser)
  • Jonny Fairplay (Survivor) and Michelle Deighton (America's Next Top Model)
  • Suzy Preston and Matt Hoover (The Biggest Loser)
  • Lauri Waring and George Peterson (Real Housewives of Orange County)
  • Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler (Skating with Celebrities)
  • Erik Huffman and Jaime Dugan (Survivor: China)
  • Ronn Moss (The Bold and the Beautiful) and Devin DeVasquez (former Playboy Playmate)
Now, I'm going to have to do a little research on this, but aren't some of these couples past the wedding day best-before date to appear on the show? And also, Jonny Fairplay? Really?

That aside, how do you feel about this? Yea or nay on the celebrity episodes? And is GSN to be commended on the inclusion of same-sex couples now, or do you feel that they should have been included from the start? I understand that there may be some strong feelings on both sides of the fence here, but I will ask that you please keep your comments respectful.

I knew that they would eventually start allowing same sex couples. And I think it’s a sign of progress

Good job GSN going for the safety net of a celebrity gay couple for the first ones…will we see any regular folk?

Yep, there will be regular gay couples (as in the non-celebrity type) on the show too. And I’m really hoping they’re scattered in with the straight couples, and not given “special episodes” or anything like that. A newlywed is a newlywed, as far as I’m concerned.

Getting REAL tired of seeing contestants from reality TV (and I always use that term REAL loosely!) bounce from show to show. Looking at that list, if these are the biggest stars they could get on this show…why bother? Just give us REAL civilian couples.

Nice to see GSN recognizing that same-sex couples can embarrass each other on TV as much as straight couples! :)

Everyone seems to forget that this is not the first time GSN has done a relationship show with same-sex couples. At least one same sex couple appeared on GSN’s early effort “Burt Luddin’s Love Buffet”. (A clip of this episode can be seen on an episode of “As Seen On”, which was recently posted to Youtube.

The whole ordeal seems like quite a bit of hype for nothing. There are so many better formats out there than Newlywed Game (which doesn’t work in the modern age, where ’sexual innuendo’ is a thing of the past). It’s a big publicity stunt that GSN is trying to capitalize on, and it will work for a few minutes, but won’t help the actual ratings a bit.
