Reader Mailbag: Deal or No Deal Applications

Monday October 27, 2008
Out of all the reader e-mail I get, the vast majority of questions have to do with getting on Deal or No Deal. It seems that a lot of you really want to be a contestant on this show! Here are a few quick questions that have been popping up lately, along with my answers and advice.

Q: Can I apply to be on both the prime time and the syndicated versions of Deal or No Deal at the same time?

A: The quick answer is yes! You can apply to both shows, but according to NBC, you can only appear on one of them. So if you get the call to be on one, your application for the other is discarded.

Q: I don't have a video camera or camcorder. Can I still send in an application?

A: You can apply for the syndicated Deal or No Deal without a video, but the mail-in applications for the prime time version require one.

Q: I sent in an application last month but haven't heard back yet. Should I apply again?

A: Not yet! When I spoke to Deal or No Deal casting director Neal Konstantini, he asked that anyone who wants to be on the show wait one year before applying again. Rest assured that your application will be viewed and sorted, and that if you're being considered for the show, someone will contact you. One of the great things about Deal is that they guarantee that anyone who applies, either in person at a casting call or through the mail, will have their application seen.

Hi Tonja,

I really don’t know when the show will be back with any regularity – or even if it will at all. There are three episodes scheduled to air in May, and after that there’s no news whatsoever. I’d hold off on sending anything, especially if you’ve already heard from them.

As soon as I hear anything either way though, it’ll be posted!

CASTING P.O. BOX 1916

(15) Jason says:

I do not work for Deal or No Deal, but I’m guessing that is the address that the Prime Time version of Deal or No Deal uses for casting videos. I can see two problems with sending things there, one Deal or No Deal, NBC’s Prime Time show is no longer casting or taping new episodes. Also, the entire set has been moved to Waterford, CT. If you’d like to apply to be a contestant go to:

http://dealornodealtv.com/
and Click “Be A Contestant” or “Casting Calender”. Or you can use this link that goes directly to their online application:

http://endemol.com–live.com/casting/

Good luck

(16) Jason says:

Gloria, there are two possible reasons why your application package didn’t go through. The First, The entire Deal or no Deal operation has moved to Connecticut. Also that is the instructions for sending in material for the Prime Time network version of DOND. They are no longer taping new episodes or casting for that. If you’d like to apply for the syndicated day-time edition you can go here:

http://dealornodealtv.com/

Then click “Be A Contestant” or “Casting Calender”

(17) Nadia says:

Does anyone think there should be a children or teen version or special episode to the show? There have been special episodes with Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Why not this show too? I’m stressing the age limit too, normally cut offs for a kid’s episode is 12, and that’s not giving a chance towards older children.

July 11, 2009 at 5:29 pm
(18) andrew b says:

Nadia, there are certain game shows unsuitable for kids to be playing. While Deal or No Deal is popular among even very young kids and there are occasionally children in the audience as relatives of the player, young kids should not actually be the ones up there gambling such large amounts of money, even at lower stakes. I don’t think even teenagers are able to comprehend the idea. Young Jeopardy! games worked because it was a game of knowledge, and its only gambling parts (Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy) allow you to use what you think you know to make your wager. Deal or No Deal is a pure game of chance, and kids just are unable to understand the game properly.

The only possible way to work the show is to have the parents be the supporters, but since they’ll pretty much always do what Mommy and/or Daddy say, the idea is redundant anyways, and the show will lack anything resembling suspense in the decision phase of the game. Can a Deal or No Deal game really have any less suspense than we’ve seen NBC show us over the last year?

(19) Jason says:

I disagree with Andrew completely children and teenagers are far more cognisant than so called older wiser adults give them credit for. Children and teenagers understand far more than adults think especially with information available to anyone who can use a keyboard and a mouse.

July 14, 2009 at 12:21 pm
(20) andrew b says:

If you haven’t played the game yourself, for real money, you won’t understand exactly how difficult it would be for a young child to play it for real money.

Kids are smarter than you think they are, and I agree with you there. *coughAreYouSmarterThanA5thGradercough*

But even from the perspective of someone who hasn’t played the game, I can tell that opinions will likely change either when you become a parent yourself, or the moment you go up there and gamble the money for real. It’s stressful, and you cannot expect a young child to go through this (and play the game right to boot!) As I’ve said, Jeopardy is one thing, and Deal or No Deal is another.

Has any parent whose kid watches Deal or No Deal ever heard your little one yell “NO DEAL” on offers they would never dream of refusing if they were grown up? There’s a reason why kids are not allowed to gamble at casinos, and it’s because they are not cognizant of the need to gamble responsibly.

July 14, 2009 at 11:26 pm
(21) Jason says:

Fair enough, an adult who on a day to day basis deals with money would have a better chance of understanding whether to gamble or not, I still think that a “High School Seniors Week” might still be appropriate. They have tons of college expenses coming up.

(22) tkg says:

Andrew b. is so negative, its interesting to see something so easy still be challenging and FUN! Lets not forget Deal or No Deal was RATED THE BEST GAME SHOW 2008!!! And yes, I agree, a special week of children(12 & up) with parents advising as supporters would be great t.v.!!! Watch how many other kids start watching a game show instead of their myspace.
