Kathy Cox is Indeed Smarter Than a 5th Grader - First Million Dollar Winner
Saturday September 6, 2008
We kicked off the week with a million dollar win, and now we're capping it off with another! Kathy Cox, Georgia State Superintendent of Schools, is the first contestant to win the million-dollar prize on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?.Cox was unstoppable throughout the game, answering simple questions like "What is the first month of the U.S. calendar year that has exactly 30 days?" (April), and the more challenging ones, like the 4th grade World Geography question, "Costa Rica borders two countries. Nicaragua is one of the countries. What is the other?" (Panama). Her million dollar question, which she had to answer without any of the 'helps' offered during the rest of the game, was, "Who was the longest reigning British monarch?" She of course got the correct answer, Queen Victoria.
Even though she garnered some criticism for appearing on the show in the first place, Cox used her national television platform to remind kids that staying in school and working hard is incredibly important. But the best thing about her big win is that she is donating her prize money to three Georgia schools that desperately need funding.
Hearty congratulations to Kathy Cox, for leaving no doubt that she is definitely smarter than a 5th grader!

As soon as Fox spoiled the win in the opening of the show, I lost interest and watched something else. But congratulations to Supt. Cox and the schools that will benefit from her victory.
You are right Myke25. I felt the same way, after Foxworthy stated this at the beginning of the show, my nephew who is 9yrs old & a regular weekly watcher, CHANGE THE CHANNEL. We already knew that she was the 1st Million $$ winner. We had been waiting each season for a BIG winner, and “wow” Foxworthy spoiled it all. I sure miss the 1st class those little 5th grader was “Awesome”
