Jason Luna Wins the Million on "1 vs 100"

Follow me on:

As much as I hate to admit it, in the "Battle of the Sexes" on the 1 vs. 100 season premiere, the men cleaned up big time. But what an exciting hour!

Things started off a little slowly, as female contestant Kathryn Cazorla faced a testosterone-filled mob of 100 men. She was stumped by a question involving prime numbers and didn't hear me screaming the correct answer through the television intertubes, so the remaining mob of 39 men split her $50,000 winnings.

Then came contestant Jason Luna. The poor guy had to face 100 women, as well as repeated questions from Bob Saget about his love life. Jason admitted that he's never had a girlfriend, and this became a sort of theme for the rest of the show. I give him tons of credit though. At the age of 21, Jason seems extremely comfortable in his own skin, and really gave us a great show to watch. He was stumped early in the game by a question involving Olympic weight-lifting events, and ended up using two "helps" before landing the correct answer.

Jason was very confident and kept playing the game, even when he locked in at a quarter of a million dollars. With 14 mob members left, Jason chose the mob over the money and got a question about which holiday was the biggest for card-giving. His choices were Christmas, Mother's Day, and Valentine's Day. He battled it out with himself for a few moments, and then chose Christmas.

Instead of revealing the answer right away, Saget showed us how many mob members got the question right. One by one, the booths lit up in red, and the boxes disappeared from the prize ladder. Not a single one got the correct answer! If Jason was right, he'd win a million - if he was wrong, no one would win any money. Fortunately he was right, and became the first ever winner of $1,000,000 on 1 vs. 100.

Jason Luna was a great contestant to watch, and we offer him our heartiest congratulations!

Congrats to Jason Luna but what they didn’t tell you is that he is in college now (a junior at UCI), but also has been a lifelong quiz-bowler. The questions were WAY too easy and even the “trap” ones were no trap for a skilled quiz bowler.

Thanks for stopping by Pappy. So, do you think that shows like “1 vs 100″ should make their questions more difficult depending on the contestant? Or that “quiz bowlers” shouldn’t be allowed to play?

I don’t think it makes a difference either way. There have been lots of trivia-circuit contestants on game shows over the years, and they usually end up being the ones who are the most fun to watch. Ken Jennings comes immediately to mind, but there are many others.

I am glad this individual won the million dollars. Clearly he seemed like an intelligent individual, and I have no qualms with intelligent people winning such large sums of money. The smartest people should be the richest in this country, and I know that this is unfortunately not always the case.

The magnitude of his win is heightened by the fact that he’s so young – at such a young age (21), investing this money in stable index fund(s) over a long period of time, he can expect to accumulate on the order of $15 million by the age of 50 with no annual addition to this investment.

Again, I am very happy for him. His intellectual adeptness warrants such a large sum of money coming into his life at such an early age. He earned it.
