Rules Change on "1 vs. 100"
Friday December 14, 2007
Die-hard fans of 1 vs. 100 may not be happy with this. BuzzerBlog reports that a tipster, who apparently is a member of the mob in an upcoming show, has leaked the new scoring rules.Instead of eliminated mob members being worth a predetermined amount of money, the new cash ladder is based on the number of mob members exiting the game. For every ten mob members eliminated, contestants earn a set amount of cash. The first ten mob members gone earns a contestant $1000. Twenty mob members eliminated equals $5000. The amount of money continues to grow in this fashion, ending with a million dollars for clearing out the entire mob.
What this really means is that mob members who stick around and outlast the contestant will end up with smaller amounts of money. While I don't really mind the new rules from the "1" perspective, awarding money to the mob has always been an integral part of the game, and one of the factors that makes it all work. They'll still win cash, for sure, but this sort of cap might make things a little less exciting.
How do you feel about this change in 1 vs. 100? Will it affect the game at all? The show premieres January 4th, on NBC.

I think it will be okay.. since usually the “1″ eliminates almost 80-90% of the mob.. so it still be worth thousands of dollars

In our Philippine edition, they also changed the rules.
Before the start of the game, the “1″ must choose 10 mob members to be his “10 picks” in 60 seconds, else the computer will randomly choose the 10.
The “1″ must eliminate first all of these 10 mob members before the “1″ can choose between the MONEY or the MOB.. so far nobody has successfully eliminated their “10 picks”.
Wow Jeff – that’s an interesting way to play the game. I’d like to see that here, just for an episode or two. Thanks for the description!
It’s on YouTube:)

and other previous episodes..
By the way, we also have this rule: All those mob members who will survive will be named “The Unbeatables” and will return in the next game
Thanks for the links – that was fun to watch! Do they always go back and forth between languages like that?
We have mob members returning for the next game as well, if they survive.
I think it would be a great asset to the game because it makes it more challenging (encourages viewers to think more mathematically as not a lot of shows has done.)and besides it will keep “The One” in play longer due to these circumstances. It will keep viewers on the edge of their seats wondering if there will be enough mob members eliminated for “The One” in order to advance at all to the next money increment. If the numbers aren’t achieved in let’s say 2 questions. There’s a bigger chance for “The One” to be eliminated and lose the money to the mob.
In regards to the Mob’s perspective, due to the new rules Mob members have a bigger chance to remain in the game. The longer the mob members stay in the show then the more money they’ll earn eventually in different episodes.
That’s my opinion for now. When the new premiere arrives, it may either thwart it or uplift it.
Ivan, I hope you’re right. What I’m concerned about is that we’ll see fewer winners from the “one” perspective, because as you said, they’ll try to play longer and potentially end up with nothing.
I’m not sure that the mob members will have a better chance to stick around though – they’ll still be eliminated one by one, same as before. So it’ll depend, as it should, on how well they answer the questions. But their potential winnings will decrease with this new format, because the “one” will have to reach platforms before adding cash to the pot.
I think it’ll be a bit of an adjustment for regular viewers, but it’s certainly not disastrous.
It removes the “big risk vs big reward” part of the show that has given it one of the most thrilling game shows, and was actually considered in the pilot. Having $500,000 and just 7 members of the Mob left isn’t as rewarding as a player with $300,000 and 7 members remaining.
I think after these eight shows are aired we’ll see a revolt wanting a return back to the money per mobster idea. I liked the Season 1 rules although the rules needed just two tweakings — if a contestant was wrong and the mob was all wrong, it should be a draw and everyone square off again for another shot. The other tweak I would offer would come at 90 mob members defeated — at 1 vs 10, a contestant would ensure themselves between 1% (at 90) and 10% (at 99) of their winnings regardless to encourage players to go for the million.
But also I’d like to see more general knowledge questions being tougher and include more “multiple part” questions that require you to understand different things to get the answer. The question that was Raul’s Waterloo, the Capital of the United States, was a great example of that format, where contestants had to know (a) the city, and then (b) the mayor of the city, to earn the answer. The choices were Daley, Fenty, and Newsom, and I could get that off the clues since one was Chicago and one was San Francisco.
One science question was well-written(Which celebrity headline would be appropriate if the star had the disease conjunctivitis?) since it wanted contestants to know what is the common name of the symptom (pink eye). It was written in a funny manner, but it tested contestants.
Hi Bobby,
You said, “if a contestant was wrong and the mob was all wrong, it should be a draw and everyone square off again for another shot.” — I agree with this 100%. It just seems more fair. If there has to be a penalty, than the contestant takes a hit in their prize pool or something.
I agree also about the questions, and this is a problem in lots of shows. There needs to be a variety of questions, but it’s amazing to see some of the easy questions people get sometimes, and even at the high payout levels.
